Norton’s U14 girls D1 team kicked off its season by capturing the U14 A championship for the Mansfield Columbus Cup tournament. The girls were challenged early and often in round robin play. Throughout these games, they showed a great deal of poise and grit with ties to Mansfield and Easton, and finally breaking through with a 3-1 win over Lexington. In the playoffs, Norton was able to eek out a 1-0 win vs Northbridge, the lone score on beautiful near post goal by Haley Elliott. The girls followed up that effort with a tidy 4-1 win in the finals vs Lexington. Haley Elliott scored the first 2 goals of the game, the second on a nice cross from Abbie Kurtzer. Mary Rorke scored Norton's third goal on a bullet from the top of the 18. Hannah John scored Norton's final goal by crashing the net (and the keeper) on a beautiful cross from Maddie Fong. Norton's defense of Amanda Britko, Victoria Anderson, Jackie Ireland, Liz Dufault, Jenn Caramanica, and Katya Freitas, in combination with solid keeper play from Xenia Nikolos, allowed just one goal, a penalty kick, in the playoffs. The effort put forth was truly a team effort with ALL 17 players contributing in important ways. The Mansfield tournament was the kickoff to the Norton U14 girls competitive travel season. The girls will continue on to winter indoor play and will conclude next Spring with South Coast Soccer League play. Left to Right

Late registrations are still being accepted for the Fall Recreational season. Anyone
registering after May 31st may be placed on a wait list and will be
assigned to a team if/when space is available. A $15.00 nonrefundable
late fee will be imposed for each late registration accepted.
Norton's Fall Recreational season is run entirely by volunteers. The
season normally runs nine consecutive weekends, starting in early
September and ending in early November. Players practice once a week
with games on Saturdays at the newly renovated Norton Middle School
fields. Your child will experience the fun of playing on a team,
friendly competition, and will receive a uniform and a ball.
NYS uses an online registration system for Fall Recreational signups. There are no walk-in signups. The registration link is now available on the Fall Recreational page of the NYS website. Additional program information can be found on that webpage.
** Deadline for registering is May 31st ** Norton boys and girls born 8/1/1997 through 7/31/2007 are eligible. The cost will be $95. Please note this represents the first increase in 5 years and is due to increased maintenance costs. In order to promote and broaden volunteer participation, a $20 volunteer fee will also be added during the registration process. This fee is per family and will be refunded at the end of the season on completion of volunteer service.
Registration is also open for the NYS Summer Clinic and U5 Striker Soccer program. Click on the NYS Summer Clinic or U5 Striker links on the NYS website for more details. New this year, the NYS Summer Clinic will offer a second week.
Finally, the 2011-2012 season marked the second year where the newly renovated fields have been in use by Norton Youth Soccer. As of April 1, 2012, NYS has invested $84,192 into the field complex. A detailed financial breakdown can be found on the Field Restoration page of the NYS website. Recent work has focused on seeding and irrigating Field 8 as well as bringing online an additional well that is needed to not only irrigate Field 8, but also the remaining fields. Field 8 is located on the far right side of the complex and will be large enough for an 11v11 field or several smaller fields. It is our hope that this field will be available for use starting Fall 2012. Unfortunately, the cost of the new well and renovation of Field 8 have all but depleted the Field Restoration account. As many of you have seen, there are still many fields in dire need. The cost to renovate the remaining fields will be significant. Our goal is to renovate all of the fields by 2014. It's also important to note that as fields are restored, our maintenance costs also increase simply because there is more grass to mow and take care of. How quickly we can achieve this will depend greatly on our ability to fund the project. When registering, please consider donating at the Gold ($50), Silver ($25) or Bronze ($10) levels for this phase of the project. Families making donations will be recognized on the Friends of NYS page on the NYS website. Your donation will go a long way in a field complex we can be proud of. For more info on the project, go to the Field Restoration Project page on the NYS website. Thanks for your support.

Competitive Travel team tryout dates, times, and field info are now posted on the Competitive Travel page of the NYS website. Many tryouts will begin this coming weekend (September 24th). Players must be born no later than July 31, 2004 to be eligible. Please ensure that your child attends the correct tryout. Tryouts are based on your child's birth date. An age group chart can be found on the Competitive Travel page. Players should bring a ball and plenty of water. Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in. Your child must attend ONE of the two tryouts to be eligible for a competitive team. Descriptions of the programs our Competitive Travel teams participate in are below. If you have any questions, you can contact Gerald Kimber White, NYS Competitive Travel Director, at competitive@nortonyouthsoccer.org. Winter Indoor Travel This is a competitive environment, with players selected for teams through tryouts or other means. Indoor teams play from November to April based on schedules prepared by the facility. Expenses are based on team fees, equipment needs, uniform purchase and possibly insurance. The facility cost per player is determined by dividing the total team cost by the number of players. Each team member must also purchase a uniform. Facilities generally run the season with either two sessions of 10 games or three sessions of seven games. Spring Travel NYS is affiliated with the South Coast Soccer League (SCSL), which covers all of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket as well as towns from Norton to Fall River and New Bedford. This is a competitive travel league, with teams from U8 through U18. Some age groups have Division 1 and Division 2 teams. Teams are selected through tryouts or other means and placement is not guaranteed. Cost is determined by SCSL team registration fees, referee payments, uniform and equipment needs. Participation fees are reviewed each year to cover NYS costs. The eight game season starts in early April and runs through early June. Games are played on Saturday and Sunday.

Opening Day for the Fall Recreational season couldn’t have kicked off any better amidst a beautiful sunny day. Over 650 players on 62 teams are participating this Fall. Many literally stepped onto the field for the first time last Saturday due to the many rained out practice days! In addition to the 650+ NYS players, 94 players from the Norton Parks and Recreation U5 Strikers program, who are in part supported by NYS, also played on Saturday.
From all accounts, the first day of the Fall Recreational season went very well. Below are some important notes:
- Picture Day is this Saturday (9/17)
. Your coach will inform you of your team’s photo shoot time. The schedule is also posted on the NYS website. Please arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of time. Also be aware that parking may be challenging on Saturday so plan for extra time.
The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge will take place this Saturday from 11-2 where your child will be able to test his/her soccer skills. All players are welcome regardless of age. Players ages 10-14 will be eligible to advance to district, state, and even national competitions.
Please make sure fields are cleaned up after every game and practice. Remember, these are your fields too!
Please make sure bug spray is applied to your child before every practice. EEE and West Nile Virus have been detected impacting people in our area.
If you have any questions about our Fall program or would like to help in some way, you can email fallrecleague@nortonyouthsoccer.org
We have received so many compliments on the renovated fields. Last year marked the first year where the newly renovated fields were opened and used during the Fall Rec and Competitive Travel seasons. It may not be apparent, but a great deal of work is being done on the next phase. A new well has recently come online with plenty of water pressure to service the remaining fields. In the coming weeks, work will begin in earnest on the area to the far right of the Middle School fields. This area consisted of an 11v11 field (Field 8). Our hope is to have this area seeded in the next few weeks. Once that is complete, we can focus our attention to the middle fields (Fields 4 and 5) and finally the field in the very rear of the complex (Field 7). Norton Youth Soccer would like to thank those families who contributed to the Field Restoration Project through online registration of our Competitive Travel and Fall Recreational programs. Through just this fundraising effort, 177 families contributed $3,665. These families have been recognized on the Friends of NYS page on the NYS website. In addition, this summer’s NYS soccer camp was wildly successful, filling to capacity at 125 players. Proceeds from the camp totaled $8,477.01 and went directly to the Field Restoration account. While the amount of funds raised seems like a lot, in the grand scheme of things, we’ve still got a long way to go. We would like to thank all those who participated in the Sports Authority fundraiser. We are currently running a fundraiser with the Chateau Restaurant where 5% of all proceeds goes to the Field Restoration fund from the sale of gift cards purchased online at the Chateau’s website. To purchase a gift card, click on the Chateau Restaurant ad at the NYS website. Coming soon will be a calendar raffle which will be an important fundraiser toward the fields.
While all thoughts seem to be on the Fall Recreational season, the NYS Board has been busy planning for the Competitive Travel season. Teams are selected through tryouts with each team playing other towns in the Winter and Spring months. Last Spring, almost 3/4 of the Norton teams made it to the playoffs with two teams winning South Coast championships and advancing to the State tournament. Tryouts are scheduled for the weekends of Sept 24/25 and Oct 1/2. More details and exact dates/time will be available shortly. If you have any questions around the Competitive Travel program, please send an email to competitive@nortonyouthsoccer.org
Finally, NYS is planning to offer its U6-U8 Indoor Program. This program has been offered in the past as two 6-week sessions (Nov-Dec and Jan-Feb) on Sunday afternoons. Each Sunday consists of 15 minutes of practice and a 40-minute scrimmage. This is a recreational division available to any U6 to U8 player not on a competitive team. The program cannot be offered unless we have someone serve as director. If you are interested, please send email to fallrecleague@nortonyouthsoccer.org
If you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact NYS at nys@nortonyouthsoccer.org

The Norton United U8 Boys capped their 1st competitive season together with a 1st place finish in South Coast Soccer League Division 1. The boys went undefeated going 8-0 in Spring SCSL action. Their motto and team cheer all year has been "All For One And One For All", and it certainly showed as the players together developed into a Champion soccer team that trusted each other, relied on each other and always helped each other no matter the challenge.

The Norton U9 boys team went 2-0-1 in the Memorial Day Cup tournament in Foxboro. First up was their frequent rival Foxboro. An
excellent contest resulting in a 3-2 final. Norton then went on to beat a Walpole U10 team by a score of 4-2. The team's last game was
against an impressive Newton team. The game proved to be their best effort of the year resulting in a 0-0 tie. Even more impressive was that the same Newton team beat Norton 7-1 last year. Coach Steve Hughes and Coach Dave Sharpe said the kids had a great day! Below is a photo from the tournament. Please take note of the very sharp tournament jerseys the team had made for the tournament! NYS would like to congratulate the team on a great tournament!

The May General Meeting for Norton Youth Soccer is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00 at the Yelle School. Topics for discussion include Spring soccer, the Fall Recreational program, and any other organizational issues suggested by the attendees. NYS would like to inform you of the many recent changes on the Board of Directors. Congratulations to Brian Murphy who was elected President. Congratulations also go out to Mark Anderson, elected as Vice President, Recreational Division. Also, please welcome Melissa Miller, Mike Moniz, and Paul O’Brien as our newest Directors, as well as Dan Sheedy who will be beginning a second term. Finally, the Board would like to thank Bill Lach for his many years of dedicated service. Bill has been instrumental in so many aspects of Norton Youth Soccer including countless hours spent on the Field Restoration Project along with his important contributions as Director of Coaching. Preparation and planning are already underway for the Fall Recreational season. An enormous amount of planning occurs behind the scenes to make the Fall season successful. Last year, 667 children played on our newly renovated fields. Online registration is now open at the NYS website. Previously registered families have been notified via e-mail. Please help us reach out to new families and kindergarten age children. Registration cost per player will remain the same as last season ($85 per player + $20 volunteer fee per family). Deadline for registering is May 31st. For more information, go to the Fall Recreational page of the NYS website. NYS is entirely volunteer driven. For a list of volunteer positions, click here. During registration, you will have an opportunity to select a volunteer position. If you are interested in volunteering in other ways, send email to FallRecLeague@nortonyouthsoccer.org. Please consider volunteering and making a difference. To date, Norton Youth Soccer had invested over $65,000 into the field complex, funds that were used solely for the purposes of field renovation. This past Fall, three restored fields opened up for play. We still have a long way to go. There are many fields in dire need. Phase 2 has officially kicked off with a goal to irrigate additional fields. How quickly we can achieve this will depend greatly on our ability to fund the project. When registering, please consider donating to this effort. Your donation will go a long way in a field complex we can be proud of. NYS competitive travel teams recently wrapped up winter indoor play. For the recently concluded winter session, four NYS teams were crowned champions. Click here for a news article. Competitive travel teams from U8 to U18 are now several games deep in the Spring season. For years, “home” games have been played in Taunton or Rehoboth. Because of your generosity, for the first time in years, our home games are now played on the newly renovated fields at the Norton Middle School. Notes - Registration is now open for the NYS summer soccer camp. The camp will run from Monday July 25th to Friday July 29th. A camp brochure is now available at the Summer Camp link at the NYS website.
- The Norton Parks and Recreation Department will once again be offering the U5 Striker Soccer Program. Registration and a program brochure are available on the NYS website.

Norton Youth Soccer would like to recognize our member families below for their generous contributions to the NYS Field Restoration Project. Through a recent fundraising drive from our Competitive Travel team registration and from Fall Rec volunteers kindly donating their volunteer reimbursements, we had 107 member families donate a total of $2,315. This is an incredible amount and will go a long way towards Phase 2 of the Field Restoration Project. Phase 2 has officially kicked off with a goal to fully irrigate the remaining fields. Short term costs are estimated at around $15,000. How quickly we can achieve this will depend greatly on our ability to fund the project. You can click on the Field Restoration Project link on the NYS website for more info on the project. Thanks again for helping in our efforts towards a field complex we can all be proud of!

Congratulations to Mike Tetreault on winning the state championship for the 10-year old age group in the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge held on November 14th at Abington High School. The Soccer Challenge is a competition based penalty kicks where each player is given 25 shots. The goal for this competition is divided into a series of five scoring zones. The upper corners of the goal are 20 point zones, the lower corners 10 point zones, and the central region a five point zone. One of Mike's fellow Norton contestants was quoted as saying "Go big or go home!" which was very appropriate in Mike's case. Instead of going safe at the lower corners, Mike showed plenty of guts and precision by going after the much tougher, upper corners. In the championship round, Mike won the title by registering a phenomenal score of 255 points!

The November General Meeting for Norton Youth Soccer is scheduled for Wednesday, November 10th, 7:00pm at the Yelle School cafeteria. Topics for discussion include a wrap-up of the Fall Recreational season, Competitive Travel soccer, field restoration update, the upcoming U6-U8 indoor program, and any other organizational issues suggested by the attendees. Next Spring, we will likely lose several valued and dedicated board members so it is imperative that new board members come up through the ranks so that we can continue providing quality programs for our young soccer players. Attending the General Meetings is an important step in getting more involved.
We’re not sure if it’s happened before, but we were a perfect 9 for 9 for Fall Rec Saturday’s. If you have any feedback on the season, you can provide it at the General Meeting or send email to fa ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org The Board also hopes that everyone enjoyed their time on the renovated fields. Please note that the renovated fields will be closed until next Spring when we will, for the first time in many years, be hosting true home games for South Coast Soccer League play. The Board is asking that you stay off of the fields as well as ask others to leave if you happen upon unauthorized use. Remember, these are your fields too and are reserved for Norton Youth Soccer use.
We are closer than ever to fully restoring all of the fields. A new well was drilled last month yielding very good water pressure. Phase 2 cost to date is $5,930 for the well drilling and about $200 in supplies. Our plan is to install irrigation lines this Fall to one of the fields, possibly Field 8 (11v11 field furthest to the right). We will also be looking at installing electrical service to the well. All told, we are probably looking at another $15,000 in short-term costs. To keep the momentum full steam ahead, we’re pulling out all the stops fundraising-wise. NYS recently transferred the proceeds from Picture Day ($1,380.83) to the Field Restoration account. NYS would also like to thank the 35 NYS soccer families who participated in the Chateau field fundraiser netting $279.61. Another fundraiser from last month at Montione’s Bakery will be adding to the total. Each Saturday, it was very heartening to see all the donations in the field collection jar. Also, if your child is a competitive travel player, you will be given an opportunity to contribute at a Gold ($50), Silver ($25), or Bronze ($10) level at registration. Contributors will be recognized on the NYS website once registration closes. Finally, if you would like to donate in other ways such as materials, services, or volunteer in some capacity, please contact NYS at ny ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org

All games will be played at the Taunton Boys and Girls Club. Space is limited and available on a first come first serve basis. Norton’s U12 girls tournament team wrapped up a very successful Mansfield Columbus Cup tournament by capturing the U12 A division championship. The girls not only demonstrated their excellent soccer skills, but also showed a great deal of poise and grit throughout. Solid keeper play by Victoria Anderson and Xenia Nikolos along with a stingy defense led by Nikolos, Amanda Britko, Annabel Diestel, Liz Dufault, Mary Rorke, Emma Sudduth, and Kathryn Ward resulted in just a single goal scored against Norton over the five games played. Norton was tested early on by Mansfield, but prevailed 1-0 on a goal by Haley Elliott. Norton followed up with a tidy 4-0 win over Newton on goals by Elliott, Nikolos, Maddie Fong, and Alexa Derosa. The last round robin game was against a very physical North Attleboro team. Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Norton’s Fong tied the game with a strike from the top of the 18-yard box resulting in a 1-1 draw. In the semi-finals, Norton and Easton played to a 0-0 draw in a back-and-forth match. The game was decided on penalty kicks with Norton prevailing 4-3. The championship game vs Foxboro was a match of wills with each team waiting for the other to blink. The game was scoreless well into the second half until Mary Rorke made a nice run down the sideline and drilled a shot into the far side, top corner of the opposing goal in what proved to be the game winner. Maddie Fong followed up with a back breaking goal a few minutes later to help Norton win the title 2-0.
The effort put forth was truly a team effort with ALL 15 players contributing in important ways. The Mansfield tournament was the kickoff to the Norton U12 girls competitive travel season. The girls will continue on to winter indoor play in Forekicks and will conclude next Spring with South Coast Soccer League play.

This week marks the midpoint of the 2010 Rec Soccer season. Most referees have been assigned to work at least (3) of the (5) weeks to date. There are a handful of first-year referees who have only received (2) assignments. This is primarily due to conflicts with playing in rec games or requests not to work on a particular weekend.
Please understand that all referees will be assigned to work at least (5) of the (9) weeks in the season. And remember, if you are not available to work on a given Saturday, please let me know by Tuesday of that week as the schedules are finalized on Tuesday evenings.

The October General Meeting for Norton Youth Soccer is scheduled for Wednesday, October 6th, 7:00pm at the Yelle School cafeteria. Topics for discussion include the Fall Recreational season, Competitive Travel soccer, field restoration update, the upcoming U8 indoor program, and any other organizational issues suggested by the attendees. Next Spring, we will likely lose several valued and dedicated board members so it is imperative that new board members come up through the ranks so that we can continue providing quality programs for our young soccer players. Attending the General Meetings is an important step in getting more involved.
We have been fortunate to have so many sunny Saturday’s thus far in the Fall Rec season. Hopefully, our luck continues. Please be reminded that dogs are not allowed on the fields. Also, we had a number of cars boxed in last Saturday. Some could not leave for hours. Since the parking lot is not lined, please use common sense when parking.
The Board hopes that everyone is enjoying their time on the renovated fields. We are closer than ever to fully restoring all of the fields. Installation of a new well is scheduled for Tuesday, October 5th. Soon thereafter, we will be extending electrical service to the new well and can then begin installation of the irrigation system. Finally, the fields will be seeded. Our hope is that much of this can be done in 2011. This will depend greatly on how quickly we can move things along as well as the ability to fund the project. There are several ways that you can help in this very important project. If you would like to donate materials, services, or volunteer in some capacity, please contact NYS at ny ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org If you would like to donate funds by check, you can send a check to:
Norton Youth Soccer
P.O. Box 680
Norton, MA 02766
Please clearly indicate that the check is to be directed to NYS's Field Restoration project.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! This Thursday October 7th, NYS will be hosting a fundraiser at The Chateau Restaurant of Norton. Enjoy lunch, dinner or order take-out from the Chateau. When paying your check, give the waitperson a special fundraiser ticket. The Chateau Restaurant will contribute 25% of the total bill to NYS. Click here for the fundraiser ticket. All proceeds will go directly to the Field Restoration account.
For those of you who would like to help in other ways, NYS is in need of volunteers in the following areas:
- Sponsor Plaque Delivery: We have an immediate need for a few people to help deliver sponsor plaques to area businesses.
- Sponsorship Lead: Sponsorships are very important in keeping registration and equipment costs reasonable for NYS members. We are in need of someone who would be NYS’ interface to sponsors. Responsibilities include maintaining sponsor lists, sending out letters in the Spring, enhancing the sponsor experience, etc…
- Clothing Stand: Manage sales and inventory of NYS items. Manage clothing stand during the Fall Recreational season.
- Boston Breakers Contact: This individual will serve as the interface between NYS and the Boston Breakers women’s professional soccer team.
While all the attention has been on the Fall Recreational season, the NYS Board has been busy with the upcoming Competitive Travel season. Teams are currently being selected through tryouts with each team playing other towns in the Winter and Spring months. Rosters are being posted as selections are made on the Competitive Travel page of the NYS website. If you have any questions, send an email to our Competitive Travel Director, Gerald Kimber White, at co ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org
NYS plans to again offer our popular U8 Indoor Program. These one-hour games will run for 6 weeks on Sundays starting in November (after the rec season closes). A second session will be considered if there is enough interest. Each hour consists of 15 minutes of practice and a 40-minute scrimmage. This is a recreational division available to any U-06 to U-08 player not on a competitive team. More details will be provided in a separate email. In order for the program to get off the ground, NYS needs one or two volunteers to help administer the program. These individuals will interface with coaches, parents, as well as interface with the board through a designated board member. If you are interested, please send email to ny ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org or speak to Mark Anderson at the fields on Saturday’s.
Finally, congratulations to the winners of the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge! Results are below. Winners will be contacted shortly and will move on to district level competition.

Not only did Opening Day come with unbelievably beautiful weather, it also marked an important milestone with the opening of the newly renovated fields. To commemorate this event, NYS board members past and present attended a ribbon cutting ceremony. NYS has invested $50,000 thus far into the field complex, funds used solely for the purposes of field renovation. A complete summary and financial overview of Phase 1 can be found on the Field Restoration Project page of the NYS website. The plan is to also host next Spring’s competitive travel games at the new fields. This would mark the first time in 4 years that NYS travel teams will have true home games.
As you have seen, we still have a long way to go. There are many fields in dire need. Phase 2 has kicked off with a goal to fully irrigate the remaining fields. Installation of a new well is scheduled for the week of September 27th. Soon thereafter, we will be extending electrical service to the new well and can then begin installation of the irrigation system. Finally, the fields will be seeded. Our hope is that much of this can be done in 2011. This will depend greatly on how quickly we can move things along as well as the ability to fund the project. Please clearly indicate that the check is to be directed to NYS's Field Restoration project. Thank you for your support in providing soccer facilities to our children that we can be proud of!!
From all accounts, the first day of the Fall Recreational season went very well. Below are some important notes:
- Picture Day is this Saturday (9/18). Your coach will inform you of your team’s photo shoot time. The schedule is also posted on the NYS website. Please arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of time. Also be aware that parking may be challenging on Saturday so plan for extra time.
- The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge will take place this Saturday from 10-noon where your child will be able to test his/her soccer skills. Players ages 10-14 will be eligible to advance to district, state, and even national competitions.
- Please make sure fields are cleaned up after every game and practice. Remember, these are your fields too! Teams that repeatedly leave trash may have their games reassigned to unrenovated fields.

While all thoughts seem to be on the Fall Recreational season, the NYS Board has been busy planning for the Competitive Travel season. Teams are selected through tryouts with each team playing other towns in the Winter and Spring months. Last Spring, many of the Norton teams made it to the playoffs with three teams winning South Coast championships and advancing to the State tournament. Tryouts are tentatively scheduled for the weekends of Sept 25/26 and Oct 2/3. More details will be available shortly. We also still have coaching vacancies for the following age groups: U8 Girls, U12 Boys, U13 Girls and U15/16 Boys. Without coaches, we cannot form these teams. If you are interested in filling any of these vacancies, please send an email to co ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org
Finally, the September NYS General Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15th, 7:00 at the Yelle School library. Topics for discussion include Fall and competitive travel soccer, and any other organizational issues suggested by attendees. Next Spring, we will likely lose several valued and dedicated board members so it is imperative that new board members come up through the ranks so that we can continue providing the programs our children deserve.
If you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact NYS at ny ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org

While many families are enjoying the summer off from soccer, board members and volunteers have been busy over the past few months preparing for the upcoming Fall recreational season. With over 600 players registered, an enormous amount of time and effort goes into the planning and running of this program. Here are some updates:
- Late registrations are still being accepted. Go to the NYS website and click on Fall Recreational for more details.
- Teams are currently being formed and should be posted by mid August.
- Practices are slated to begin the first week of September with Opening Day planned for Saturday, September 11th.
- A referee clinic will be held for anyone interested in refereeing Fall Rec games. This clinic is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, September 9, 7:00 - 9:00 PM, Yelle Cafeteria. You must be in 7th grade or higher to qualify.
- As a reminder, players WILL NOT be permitted to play with earrings. Note that this was clearly stated during player registration.

After many years in the making, NYS plans on opening our newly renovated fields this Fall (Saturday games only). NYS would like to thank all those who have contributed financially and through hard work and dedication. While NYS is closing in on an important milestone in restoring these fields, you will see that many more fields are in desperate need. NYS is always reluctant to raise fees so one way to raise the necessary funds is through fundraising activities. Currently, NYS is partnering with the New England Revolution where NYS will receive a portion of the sale of every season ticket, Four Game package, single game ticket, or Birthday Blast when ordered from the NYS website. Click on the Revs logo on the NYS website to order.
NYS competitive travel teams continue to excel at the highest levels despite being one of the smaller towns population-wise in the area and in the South Coast conference. NYS teams recently wrapped up yet another successful Spring competitive season. Congratulations to the following South Coast Soccer League Champions:
- U12 Boys Division 1 (Chris Cappellini)
- U12 Girls Division 1 (Dave Sharpe)
- U11 Girls Division 1 (Tony Fong)
These champions advanced to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions which took place in Lancaster MA from June 25 – 27. The U12 Boys advanced to the state championship title game with a 3-0-1 record. Unfortunately, the team fell short losing in the finals 2-0 to Beverly. The U11 girls went undefeated with one win and two ties, narrowly missing the playoffs. The U12 girls were stingy in its defense, but just could not muster enough offense in a very tough bracket. A number of other NYS teams went deep into their South Coast playoffs. For more details, go to the News section at the NYS website.
Finally, there are still a few openings in the U5 Striker Soccer Program that will also run in September. A brochure is available on the NYS website. Click on U5 Strikers Fall Program.

Late registrations are currently being accepted for the Fall Recreational season. Norton’s Fall Recreational season is run entirely by volunteers. The season normally runs nine consecutive weekends, starting in early September and ending in early November. Players practice once a week with games on Saturdays at the Norton Middle School. Your child will experience the fun of playing on a team, friendly competition, and will receive a uniform and a ball.
NYS uses an online registration system for Fall Recreational signups. There are no walk-in signups. The registration link is now available on the Fall Recreational page of the NYS website. Additional program information can be found on that webpage.
Norton boys and girls born 8/1/1995 through 7/31/2005 are eligible. Registration cost per player will remain the same as last season ($85 per player). A $20 volunteer fee will also be added during the registration process. This fee is per family and will be refunded at the end of the season on completion of volunteer service. A $15.00 nonrefundable late fee will be imposed for each late registration accepted after the May 24th deadline.
Contact the NYS Registrar at registrar@nortonyouthsoccer.org with any questions about player/volunteer signups.

From the Sun Chronicle
Holliston 2, Norton 1
HOLLISTON - Seven minutes into the first "sudden victory" period, the Panthers of Holliston put a ball past Norton goalie Audrey Maia, ending the Lancers' brilliant postseason run in the MIAA Division 2-South Sectional Tournament.
"I feel blessed to have worked with such a talented group of kids," said Norton coach Todd Kefor, whose No. 17 seeded Lancers (8-6-7) battled the Tri-Valley League champion Panthers tough for the third time this season.
While Norton had dropped 1-0 and 4-1 decision to Holliston during the TVL campaign, Norton refused to surrender space to the Panthers during the scoreless first half. The Lancers' backline defenders - Kate Ledbetter, Jillian Wry and Stephanie Powers - rose to the challenge.
"Our defense held up very well, and that's against a very fast offense," said Kefor of Norton staving off many a Panther run. Maia, who had a dozen saves in goal for Norton, gave the Lancers a chance for the win.
The Lancers, who had scored six goals in winning their first two rounds in postseason play, had Holliston on its heels - taking the lead six minutes into the second half.
Nicollette Schuko headed in a corner kick taken by Ledbetter to stun the Panthers. Holliston had a sleight 7-3 edge in shots during the first half and finally tied the match in the 70th minute on a through ball. "They pressured us in the first half, but in the second half, we came out much more aggressively," said Kefor. "We had a few pushes, we broke them down."

The Norton Youth Soccer Board welcomes you to the 2009 fall recreational season. We welcome back families who have participated in past seasons, and look forward to meeting families who are new to the league this year. We thank all who volunteered to help make the season a success.
Work continued on the field improvement project over the summer. Water storage tanks have been delivered, and an irrigation system installed to improve Field 2 (6v6) and Field 3 (8v8). We are targeting a late September date for the system to be operational, and plan to slice seed at that time. The recreational fields have been reconfigured to allow play to continue while the work is completed. NYS would like to thank Jim Browne, who has spent countless hours on this project. NYS would also like to thank Bisco and D. Schumacher Landscaping for donating their time and materials to the project. As always, NYS welcomes any fundraising suggestions or assistance as we move to Phase II of the renovation project.
While we always hope for beautiful sunny days, New England weather doesn’t always cooperate. NYS would like to remind our members to check the NYS website for any game day cancellations. Also, as in past years, the refreshment trailer will be available each Saturday of the season. Stop by and choose from an assortment of coffee, hot chocolate, donuts, cold drinks, hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks and candy.

September 12 - Opening Day
September 16 - September General Meeting
September 19 - Picture Day (click here for schedule)

Personal Best Karate will have a table set up on opening day providing information on youth safety awareness. They will also have a “Wheel of Fortune” game and a variety of prizes. Stop by the table and check out their information. Click here to learn more about their special offer to NYS.
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. If anyone has any ideas or would like to plan some activities around this date, we’d be interested in hearing from you. Seek out a board member or send email to Fa ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org
For those who volunteered, make sure you know when your shift is. Click here for volunteer schedules. For game day volunteer positions, you will need to sign the sign-in sheet to receive your $20 reimbursement at the end of the season.
Due to staffing and inventory considerations, the clothing stand is only planned to be opened the first two Saturdays of the season and Halloween. Make sure you remember to pickup your Norton Youth Soccer items on those dates!
Please be aware the referees have been instructed to watch for baseball/softball cleats, and earrings. For player safety reasons, NYS follows MYSA rules that prohibit these items during play.
Please park in designated areas only. Cones are set up to allow emergency access and should not be moved.
Competitive Season:
NYS is already ramping up for the upcoming competitive season. NYS competitive teams typically play in indoor and Spring leagues during the competitive season. Click here for more info. Norton Youth Soccer is taking applications for anyone interested in coaching a competitive travel team this year. As soon as possible and by Sept. 1 at the latest, please send email to co ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org with the age/gender and division you would like to coach. In addition, please include whether you hold a coaching license already and if so, what level you've attained, what coaching experience you have and a brief explanation of why you would like to coach the team.
Also, there's an added wrinkle this year. In the interest of making sure our youngest competitive players are launched with the best possible training, we've added a requirement that all competitive head coaches for U8-U10 age groups must hold the G coaching license by Dec. 31, 2009. The G course is available online and can be taken at your own convenience. Assistant coaches are not required to take the G course but it is highly recommended that they do so.
For next year, the 2010-2011 season, another layer will be added when U11-U12 coaches must hold the minimum of an F coaching license by Dec. 31, 2010. Those of you with your G license already should consider getting the F license now. There's an F course on Aug. 29 in Halifax and Aug. 30 in Franklin. The F and G licenses are both reimburseable by NYS.
Please send email if you have any questions and/or if you are interested in serving as a competitive coach this year. Thanks for all of your help with the young men and women athletes of Norton.

Volunteerism is alive and well in Norton! From the grill to the fields to the sidelines, the responses to our call for volunteers for the Fall season has been very uplifting. Despite the large number of responses, NYS is still seeking volunteers for the following positions for the upcoming Fall season:
- Rec league director: This key individual will oversee all aspects of the Recreational season including coordination of coaching packages, interfacing with the volunteer coordinator and age group coordinators. This position can be very rewarding to someone looking to make a big impact.
- Age group coordinators for the U7, U9/10, and U11/12 age groups (boys and girls): These individuals may be involved with team selection. They also provide direction and communications to coaches in each age group.
- Equipment: Coordinate the ordering of all equipment. Maintain an inventory. Coordinate coaches bags and delivery of equipment for all coaches.
- Clothing: Coordinate the inventory, ordering and sale of merchandise through the clothing stand and the website. Without a volunteer, NYS will miss out on a significant funding source.
June is turning out to be a busy month for fundraisers to help renovate the Middle School fields. Please support the field renovation project through these and future field fundraisers:
- A bake sale will take place this Saturday, June 6th from 2-5:30pm at the Taunton Boys and Girls Club Lewis Park fields. A number of parents have donated both baked goods and beverages with proceeds going to the fields. While there, come watch our travel teams as they compete in South Coast play. Directions to Lewis Park can be found at the NYS website under "Fields and Directions".
- Four free tickets to a future Breakers game of the winner's choice are planned to be raffled off at the NYS Night at the Boston Breakers.
- Tuesday June 23rd will be NYS night at the Chateau Restaurant in Norton. A special ticket will be sent out via email in a few weeks to all NYS members. NYS will receive 20% from all checks with this ticket attached.
Finally, tickets are still available for NYS Night at the Boston Breakers on Sunday, June 14th at 6pm. There are less than 2 weeks left before registration closes for NYS' Fall Recreational season. Please visit the NYS website (www.nortonyouthsoccer.org) for more details. Anyone registering after May 24th will be placed on a wait list and will be assigned to a team if/when space is available. A $15.00 nonrefundable late fee will be imposed for each late registration accepted.
Registration is also open for NYS's popular week long summer camp. The camp will run from July 27th to July 31st. A brochure and link to the registration page can be found by clicking on “Summer Camp” on the NYS home page (www.nortonyouthsoccer.org).
Please be aware that over 700 kids participate in the NYS fall season and over 200 kids in the competitive travel season. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to provide your children the experience you have come to expect year after year. NYS is completely volunteer driven and is in need of volunteers for the following Fall positions: Rec League Coordinator, Age Group Coordinators, Equipment Manager, coaches, and people to work the grill. Also, as we begin to renovate the fields, the league is in need of people to help drive fundraising activities. NYS is also looking for someone to manage the inventory and sale of NYS merchandise. Make a difference by volunteering for any of these positions. If interested, you can email re ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org For more details on each of these positions, visit the NYS Board and Volunteers page of the NYS website.

In 2006, NYS entered into an agreement with the Norton Schools, establishing the Middle School fields as the home of Norton Youth Soccer for the foreseeable future. Over the past couple of years, NYS has been exploring potential avenues for making substantial improvements to the fields.
Over the past two years, the league has taken several initial steps towards the goal of a field complex we can be proud to call home. To date, NYS has sunk a well, brought power to the well, and built a small shed to house the well head and pump. The league has also met with landscaping and irrigation professionals to get ideas for the next steps in the improvement process.
The degree of improvement and speed of the upgrade depend entirely on the league’s ability to finance the project. To date, nominal amounts have been factored into all league costs. However, we are at an important and more costly stage, and are reaching out to all league families for assistance. We are seeking help from anyone who may be in a position to contribute their skills or materials to pitch in and support the project. This spring, we anticipate needs that may include fencing, excavation, landscaping, and irrigation.
Our hope is to keep registration fees to a minimum. To do so, we need people with fundraising experience who can bring fresh ideas to the table and who are looking to make an impact.
NYS supports over 600 children in its Fall Recreational and indoor development programs along with over 200 players in our Competitive travel team program. Your participation will help determine the facilities we can provide for our children for years to come.
Separately, the league lost several dedicated and valued Board members in March. This is the perfect time to become involved, where your time and commitment can make a lasting difference in our league and for our town. If you cannot commit to a board position, we encourage you to participate in any way you can. A list of volunteer positions can be found at the NYS Board and Volunteers page at www.nortonyouthsoccer.org.
If you have any ideas or suggestions, would like to volunteer, or you are interested in making a donation to the field renovation project, please contact NYS at ny ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org

** Deadline for registering is May 24th ** Norton boys and girls born 8/1/1994 through 7/31/2004 are eligible. The cost is $85 per player. This year, to promote and broaden volunteer participation, the Board has instituted a volunteer fee of $20 per family. This fee will be assessed to the first player registered per family and will be reimbursed at the end of the season to all who have completed eligible volunteer service.
Anyone registering for the Fall recreational season after May 24th will be placed on a wait list and will be assigned to a team if/when space is available. A $15.00 nonrefundable late fee will be imposed for each late registration accepted.
Registration is also open for NYS’s popular weeklong Summer Clinic. A brochure can be downloaded from the Registration page of the NYS website.

This past weekend has been a tempting reminder that spring is coming. Preparation and planning are already underway for the fall recreational season. On-line registrations will open in April. Previously registered families will be notified via e-mail. Please help us reach out to new families and kindergarten age children.
The Annual Meeting and General Meetings for Norton Youth Soccer are scheduled for Wednesday, March 11th at 7:00 at the Yelle School library. Topics for discussion include Board nominations, Board Officer positions, spring soccer, field conditions, upcoming registration and any other organizational issues suggested by the attendees.
NYS is entirely volunteer driven. The league is considering a variety of measures to encourage volunteer participation and involvement. Ideas up for consideration include the addition of a volunteer fee as part of the registration process and also waiving all or a portion of family registration fees for volunteers who assume a larger volunteer role.
A partial list of the volunteer positions includes:
|
| Recreation League Coordinator | SCSL Coordinator | Uniforms | | Concessions Director | Cranberry Contact | Revolution/Breakers Contact | | Equipment | SCSL Contact | Coaching/Clinic Coordinator | | Volunteer Coordinator | Referee Coordinator | Field Development | | Concessions Assistant | Score Oversight | Fundraising/Sponsorships | | Field Scheduling | Taunton B&G Club Contact | | | Field Set-Up | Tournament Coordinator | | | League Referees | Tournament Patches | | | Traffic Control | | | | Clothing Stand | | |
Descriptions for each of these positions will be available shortly before registration opens on the NYS website. During the recreation on-line registration you will have an opportunity to select volunteer roles.
Notes:
Registrations will also be opening shortly for the NYS summer soccer camp. The camp will run from July 27th to July 31st. More information will be available shortly on line at www.nortonyouthsoccer.org.
The league will be losing several dedicated and valued Board members in the upcoming months. This is the perfect time to become involved, where your time and commitment can make a lasting difference in our league and for our town. On November 29, 2008 the Norton United U16 Girls won the Forekicks Thanksgiving Tournament in dramatic fashion. With less than two minutes left in overtime Nicolette Schuko scored the winning goal off a great corner kick from Jill Wry. The team was led by great goal keeping by Audrey Maia who only allowed 2 goals in the tournament. She was supported with great defense from Jill, Lindsey White, Emily Hastings and Liz Hunter. On the offensive side Nicolette, Colleen McDermott, Anne Ledbetter, Katie Durst, Cassie Igatta, Brianna Valerie and Kelsey Goldberg put constant pressure on the opposing teams. This is the second straight year that the team has won the championship. Congratulations to the girls and family and friends who supported the team.
The team is coached by Howard Goldberg and John Mcdermott.

1. Competitive teams are comprised of the top players in each age group. They are selected to represent Norton in both Indoor and Spring Soccer. Tryouts for the 2007/2008 season have not yet been scheduled.
2. All players MUST attend one of the tryouts to be eligible for a team; attending both is recommended. Coaches will also scout players.
3. At the tryout, players must check-in, receive a name tag and complete a registration form.
4. Players are required to purchase their own uniforms via the League. The uniforms are used for multiple seasons as the players’ number is registered with the League.
5. Players committing to an indoor team are expected to participate in both indoor sessions. Spring teams will be declared in late November. Fees for indoor will be determined by the number of players and costs associated with the team. The fee for Spring 2008 play has not been set. Other costs associated with the team (i.e. practices or tournaments) will be extra. The coach will collect and submit all payments to the League.
6. For players in the U6 and U7 age group as well as those players who do not make an A or B Team in U8 through U10, the League may be offering an Indoor Futsal program at the Taunton Boys and Girls Club on Sundays, for 10 weeks, between November and January. Teams will be formed according to age.
8. Players MUST come prepared to play soccer at tryouts. Bring a ball, wear appropriate clothing and shin guards. Players will not be permitted to tryout if they do not wear shin guards.
