Not only did Opening Day come with unbelievably beautiful weather, it also marked an important milestone with the opening of the newly renovated fields. To commemorate this event, NYS board members past and present attended a ribbon cutting ceremony. NYS has invested $50,000 thus far into the field complex, funds used solely for the purposes of field renovation. A complete summary and financial overview of Phase 1 can be found on the Field Restoration Project page of the NYS website. The plan is to also host next Spring’s competitive travel games at the new fields. This would mark the first time in 4 years that NYS travel teams will have true home games.

As you have seen, we still have a long way to go. There are many fields in dire need. Phase 2 has kicked off with a goal to fully irrigate the remaining fields. Installation of a new well is scheduled for the week of September 27th. Soon thereafter, we will be extending electrical service to the new well and can then begin installation of the irrigation system. Finally, the fields will be seeded. Our hope is that much of this can be done in 2011. This will depend greatly on how quickly we can move things along as well as the ability to fund the project. There are several ways that you can help in this very important project:

1. If you would like to donate materials, services, or volunteer in some capacity, please contact NYS at ny ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org

2. If you would like to donate funds by check, you can send a check to:

Norton Youth Soccer
P.O. Box 680
Norton, MA 02766

Please clearly indicate that the check is to be directed to NYS's Field Restoration project. Thank you for your support in providing soccer facilities to our children that we can be proud of!!

From all accounts, the first day of the Fall Recreational season went very well. Below are some important notes:

- Picture Day is this Saturday (9/18). Your coach will inform you of your team’s photo shoot time. The schedule is also posted on the NYS website. Please arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of time. Also be aware that parking may be challenging on Saturday so plan for extra time.
- The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge will take place this Saturday from 10-noon where your child will be able to test his/her soccer skills. Players ages 10-14 will be eligible to advance to district, state, and even national competitions.
- Please make sure fields are cleaned up after every game and practice. Remember, these are your fields too! Teams that repeatedly leave trash may have their games reassigned to unrenovated fields.
- A new section has been created on the NYS website. Go to the upper right of the home page and click on the division your child is in. From there, you will see a list of teams along with game, Picture Day, and volunteer schedules.

While all thoughts seem to be on the Fall Recreational season, the NYS Board has been busy planning for the Competitive Travel season. Teams are selected through tryouts with each team playing other towns in the Winter and Spring months. Last Spring, many of the Norton teams made it to the playoffs with three teams winning South Coast championships and advancing to the State tournament. Tryouts are tentatively scheduled for the weekends of Sept 25/26 and Oct 2/3. More details will be available shortly. We also still have coaching vacancies for the following age groups: U8 Girls, U12 Boys, U13 Girls and U15/16 Boys. Without coaches, we cannot form these teams. If you are interested in filling any of these vacancies, please send an email to co ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org

Finally, the September NYS General Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15th, 7:00 at the Yelle School library. Topics for discussion include Fall and competitive travel soccer, and any other organizational issues suggested by attendees. Next Spring, we will likely lose several valued and dedicated board members so it is imperative that new board members come up through the ranks so that we can continue providing the programs our children deserve.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact NYS at ny ... @nortonyouthsoccer.org
